Kappa Youth Development, Inc. in conjunction with Brian and Cynthia Howard, will be awarding a $500 scholarship in memory of Brian & Cynthia’s parents designed to a young and gifted graduating high school African-American Male or Female student who will attend Alabama State University (ASU) during the 2026-2027 school year and lives in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Must have a high school cumulative GPA of 2.0.

 

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the 2025 Bennie & Virginia Howard/Kappa Youth Development, Incorporated Scholarship, students must:

  1. Be a graduating high school senior.
  2. Have a minimum GPA of 2.0 out of 4.0.
  3. Applicant must live in the Washington DC metropolitan area.
  4. Enrolled and attending Alabama State University during the 2026-2027 academic school year.

Criteria

In order to be considered for the award, all applicants must submit the following information:

 

From Applicant:

  1. Completed application – typed and signed, an electronic signature is acceptable.
  2. Completed application essays – typed Essays are limited to 500 words. (See section 11 for more details)
  3. Student resume (1-2 pages) – outlines leadership, extracurricular activities, work experience, awards.
  4. College information sheet – includes list of schools accepted to, intended major, career interests.
  5. Acceptance letter from university.
  6. A copy of your high school transcript included with your application.

Application deadline is 11:59pm on March 1, 2026 to be received by Kappa Youth Development, Inc. The scholarship application must be received by the Kappa Youth Development, Inc. on or before the application submission date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
